Instruments in Band

The Woodwind Family

SAXOPHONE FAMILY

The standard saxophone family consists of soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone. In 6th grade, all saxophonists begin on the alto saxophone. In 7th and 8th grade, we begin to expose our saxophonists to the tenor and baritone saxophones. The soprano saxophone is usually not introduced until high school.

The Brass Family

The Percussion Family

Percussionists are some of the most versatile musicians in the band! At Duluth, we teach our percussion students to play all percussion instruments— not just one. Because this section requires strong rhythm skills, musical independence, and the ability to read both treble and bass clef, we do things a little differently. All 6th graders start on a wind instrument to build solid musical foundations. Later in the fall, students can audition for percussion. Those selected will receive focused instruction from band directors and professional percussionists to help them succeed.
